--Abolitionism was a political movement of the 18th and 19th century which sought to make slavery illegal, particularly in the United States and British West Indies. --It succeeded in making slavery illegal in the British Empire, the French colonies and the United States.
"During the 1830s until 1870, the abolitionist movement attempted to achieve immediate emancipation of all slaves and the ending of racial segregation and discrimination." (See second citation) --In early 1831, Willian Lloyd Garrison, in Boston, began publishing his famous newspaper, the Liberator, supported largely by free African-Americans, who always played a major role in the movement. --By 1835, the society had received financial support from African-American communities in the North and had established hundreds of branches throughout the free states. --The society, which attracted significant participation by women, also denounced the American Colonization Society's program of voluntary gradual emancipation and black emigration. --This led to many violent mobs, burning of any abolitionist literature, and the passing of a "gag rule" so that no-one could have any anitslavery petitions. --They were many leading abolitionists during the time of the Civil War, both men and women. Men Included: Poets James Lowell, John Whittier, Frederick Douglas, who was a former slave. Women Included: Lucretia Mott, Sarah and Angeline Grimke. .
