Where's your presentation????

Allow me to introduce an acronym for thinking about belief systems in society - SPIRE - it stands for Social, Political, Intellectual, Religious, and Economic.  Perhaps you can use this as a framework to help your classmates better understand the differences of belief or opinion that led to the Civil War.  For example, how did people in the North and South differ in their economic beliefs, or there political beliefs etc.

(good video, but keep looking for others!!)

There were two types of people of the north.  One type of person is the capitalist, the capitalist believes that slavery is econmically wrong.  The other type is an abolitionist, the abolitionist believes that slavery is morally wrong.  These two beliefs are what fed the fire to the northern agression against the south.  The Southerners of course were fought because they thought that their slavery was a good way to make America wealthier.

The caning of Sumner became a symbol in the North of Southern brutality. Meanwhile, while Brooks was initially censured for his actions, he became a hero in the South for defending Southern honor, and was subsequently reelected by his constituency.http://www.legendsofamerica.com/OZ-BleedingKansas3.html

Economically the south and the north differed in many ways.  The people of the north believed in that a union was the best way to better America.  The people of the South believed that slavery would help develop the U.S. into a powerful fruitful country.

Northerners wanted everyone to believe in the same religion, therefore people would be on the same terms and essentially the same beliefs.  The South was a place where people could believe what they wanted.  The Liberal southerners thought that a man should believe in whatever religion he wanted and make decisions for himself.  These two beliefs clashed, in the end resulting in the civil war. There were different social beliefs between the north and the south as well.  The north was viewed as mannered and disciplined.  In the south the people were more free spirited and less disciplined.

"I may say with truth, that in few countries so much is left to the share of the laborer, and so little exacted from him, or where there is more kind attention paid to him in sickness or infirmities of age. Compare his condition with the tenants of the poor houses in the more civilized portions of Europe—look at the sick, and the old and infirm slave, on one hand, in the midst of his family and friends, under the kind superintending care of his master and mistress, and compare it with the forlorn and wretched condition of the pauper in the poorhouse."

John Calhoun, a president from the south thought that it is much better to have slaves rather than pay a man very little and make him struggle to pay for his own house, bills, and food.  A slave has a home, food, and all expenses are paid, this is better than struggling on the streets.

Things to Consider:

What differnces were there between the black population in the North and South, and the role that each played during the civil war?

Ex.

What Economic/Religious beliefs did they have?

What role or say, "if any" did they play in the Government?

How did life differ for a free runaway slave serving in the army than a kept feild slave in the south?

Southern Beliefs

Social Beliefs - More Hierarchical (race and gender)

Political - Decentralized, Less goverment

Intellectual - Realist vs. Idealist

Religious - Baptist vs. Congregational

Economic- Slave Power vs. Free Labor (capitalist vs. feudalist)  Industrial vs. Agricultural
